Delays could extend past 60 minutes
Motorists stuck in the queue have reported not moving for over 30 minutes, with many switching off their engines. The incident has caused significant congestion between Junctions 6 and 8, with delays expected to worsen as evening traffic builds.
Highways officers are urging drivers to avoid the area if possible and to find alternative routes. Nearby roads, including the A56 through Sale and Altrincham, are expected to be under added pressure as traffic is diverted away from the affected section of the motorway.
Eyewitnesses report that police are working to secure the scene and direct traffic, but with recovery and medical support not yet present, delays are likely to continue into the evening.
